Keeping Your Child Healthy

Visits, Vaccines, and Screenings

Regular doctor visits, shots, and health checks help keep your child healthy and growing strong. During a well-child visit, the doctor will check things like height and weight, give needed shots, and answer your questions.

Following the schedule below helps the doctor find problems early, protect your child from serious illnesses, and make sure they’re developing well.

AgeVisitsShots and ScreeningsWhy It Matters
Birth to 15 monthsAbout 6 checkups by 15 months, plus 2 more between 15 and 30 monthsShots for hepatitis B, rotavirus, DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough), Hib, pneumonia, polio, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), chickenpox; checks for lead, growth, and developmentHelps your baby grow strong, stay safe from serious sickness, and find learning or growth needs early
Ages 3 to 6 yearsOne checkup each yearBooster shots for DTaP, polio, MMR, varicella; behavior checksPrepares children for school readiness and ongoing health monitoring. Boosters remind the body to fight illnesses like measles and mumps. They’re important since kids are around more germs at school.
Ages 7 to 21 yearsOne checkup each yearShots for Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough), meningitis, HPV; checks for depression and blood pressureSupports mental health, protects against teen illnesses, and helps build healthy habits
All ages—Yearly flu shot and other vaccines as needed (like COVID-19 or RSV)Lowers the chance of getting flu and other seasonal sicknesses

Based on the California Department of Health Care Services’ Managed Care Accountability Set (MCAS) 2026.

Parent Tips for a Smooth Doctor Visit

  • Schedule the next checkup before you leave. This makes it easier to stay on track.
  • Bring your child’s shot record to every visit. It helps the doctor keep all the records in one place.
  • Let your child choose a small treat or toy for after the visit. A reward can make the visit feel positive.
  • For babies: Pack extra diapers, a blanket, and milk or formula. Comfort items help the visit go smoothly.
  • Arrive a little early. This gives you time for paperwork. Keep a list of questions you want to ask the doctor.

Why It’s Important to Stay on Schedule

Regular checkups, shots, and screenings help your child:

  • Stay safe from diseases that can be prevented
  • Reach key growth and learning steps on time
  • Feel more comfortable and trust their doctor
  • Find health problems early, when they’re easier to treat

Our team may reach out if your child is due for a visit or vaccine. We can help with scheduling, reminders, and even connect you to community resources like food, housing, or rides.
